How to Talk to Your Boss
At times you may want to tell your employer to eat shit and die. However, there are easier ways to get your point across. Whether you are starting a new job or have been in the same office for many years, learning how to talk to your boss is essential. Therefore, brush up on some clever ways to communicate and you will be surprised how beneficial some practically placed semantics just may work in your favor.
Write it Down
It is always best to make a list of what you want to talk about. Create an outline breaking down the pros and cons of your subject. Research any pertinent information citing tangible sources that may support your concern or idea.
Rehearse
You may want to practice in front of a mirror or use someone that will answer just like your boss. Rehearsing how to tackle a specific subject will have you ultimately prepared so you don’t lose your head and start throwing staplers. Being prepared is a habit bosses love.
Do Not be So Defining
Words are powerful tools and if you state your case using terms such as “alwaysâ€, “never†or “every†it will immediately put your boss on the defensive (just think when your woman does it to you). Instead, tread lightly with words like “maybeâ€, “perhaps†or “occasionally†and you will keep the communication flowing.
Forget About Your Feelings
Business is business and if you start a conversation about your hurt feelings you will immediately be considered too fragile and treated as such. Hold your ground in a calm, professional manner while still exuding assertiveness and confidence.
Keep it “I†not “Youâ€
When you continually refer to yourself in a conversation it gives the other person minimal ammunition to fire back. Stick to terms such as “I was wondering if there was a way we could work on some guidance I need for this project†rather than “You haven’t given me any guidance on this account and I feel you have completely lost me.â€
Stop Yapping Your Piehole and Listen
Make sure you allow proper pause for your boss to jump in. Too many people want to hear themselves talk or are a bundle of nerves that listening becomes minimal. Do not interrupt and welcome your boss’s response, you just may be surprised. Not listening is a huge habit bosses hate.
Lather, Rinse, Repeat
During your dialogue repeating back pertinent points your boss makes will not only solidify it in your head it will send a message that you are actively engaged and listening.
Take it Like a Man
Be prepared to hear some things about yourself that you may not expect. Being open minded to constructive criticism displays maturity and a team player attitude that bosses love.
Positive Reinforcement
Concentrating on positive words, thoughts and ideas as well as recognizing your bosses time and willingness to speak with you will go a long way in getting what you want.
How to talk to your boss simply takes preparation and patience. By remaining focused on your goal will allow for a successful dialogue and limited bloodshed.
